Dec 16, 2012  - Craig Lord

Istanbul, World Short-Course Championships, Day 5 finals:

Men's 200m butterfly

The Olympic champion Chad Le Clos (RSA) having withdrawn so he could get to London for a sports awards event, Kazuya Kaneda (JPN) took the crown in a championship record of 1:51.01 ahead of Laszlo Cseh (HUN), on 1:51.66. The winning time took down the meet mark of 1:51.05 held by Moss Burmester (NZL) since 2008. The bronze in Istanbul went to Nikolay Skvortsov (RUS) in 1:52.33.

Kaneda took the lead on his way to turning in 53.21 at half-way, Cseh in 6th on 54.69. Two laps on, the top two had established themselves, Kaneda on 1:22.03, Cseh on 1:22.93. The Hungarian came back a touch faster but the Japanese hope had done enough to claim gold.
