Swimmers Spring Into Summer Down Under

Nov 30, 2012

A spring in the step on the first day of summer Down Under - an open letter from The Dolphins issued today

Dear swimmers of all ages, abilities and aspirations

Today is officially the first day of summer and we would like to take this opportunity as a team to encourage every Australian to be safe and have fun in the water over this festive season.  Whether you’re in the pool swimming lap after lap, at the beach enjoying the sun and surf, or just having a dip in the backyard on Christmas day, enjoy our sport of swimming and be safe this summer.

It is also with great excitement that we look ahead to the next four years and our journey to Rio 2016.

The road to Rio has started. Countless laps have already been swum, with many more to come, and the challenge of striving for success and representing Australia with humility and pride is constant. As is the search to achieve our personal best.

To our sponsors, a sincere thank you must go to EnergyAustralia, Speedo, Swisse, Novotel, Singapore Airlines, Dairy Australia, Be the Influence, broadcast partner Network Ten and ONE, and the Australian Sports Commission for ensuring the future growth and prosperity of our sport.

To Mrs Georgina Rinehart, a supporter of swimming in Australia since 1992, who we approached over a year ago to assist in the support of further developing swimmers in and out of the water, thank you for answering our call.

We are extremely grateful for your foresight in setting up the Georgina Hope Foundation Swimmers Support Scheme and commitment to us as elite athletes. This fantastic initiative will provide the necessary financial support for our swimmers to train and prepare to the best of their ability, and to meet the challenges ahead over the next four years.

To all the coaches, officials, support and administrative staff, local swim clubs, pool attendants and lifeguards, thanks for everything. To our family and friends thanks for your guidance, commitment, passion and dedication to the sport of swimming.

To the volunteers at the 953 registered swimming clubs in Australia, you are the backbone of our sport and your commitment and drive is a credit to the community spirit of this great country of ours. A country we represent with honour and pride, and being able to swim in green and gold representing Australia is something we never take for granted.

To our past Olympic, Paralympic, World, Commonwealth and Pan Pacific Champions who have paved the way in the pool, and everyone who has swum for Australia, thank you for raising the bar and setting the standards of success that we strive for.

To the rest of the world, we’ll see you in Rio… and at every other meet along the way.
