Franklin Chooses Cal and McKeever

Oct 20, 2012

The top woman swimmer and the top women's coach from the US at London 2012 are teaming up: Missy Franklin is to attend the University of California and coach Teri McKeever, ending speculation over which way the teenager would jump in a recruitment war.

“Committed to swim at Cal Berkeley! I am officially a baby Golden Bear?????? I am so honored to be a part of such a special team! (hash)GoBears,” Franklin tweeted today, confirming a move to Cal and McKeever.

The 17-year-old won the 100 and 200m backstroke crowns in London, shared gold in the 4x200m free and 4x100m medley relays and claimed bronze with US teammates in the 4x100m freestyle. She also raced in the 100m and 200m freestyle finals.

Asenior at Regis Jesuit High in Aurora, Colorado, Franklin will now forfeit all the earnings she would have been able to claim had she opted out of an NCAA "amateur" career.

She is likely to turn what Americans describe as "Pro" the year before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
