Komisarz Wins Back-To-Back Titles At Us Open

Dec 2, 2000

AUBURN, Ala. - Rachel Komisarz pulled double duty, winning back-to-back titles in the 200m free (1:59.75) and 100m fly (59.34) to highlight the second day of competition at the U.S. Open.

"I've done it before (swum back-to-back races), so I knew what I was getting into it," Komisarz said. "I was definitely tired. I think I would've been a bit faster in the 100m fly if I didn't have the 200m free before it, but I did use the adrenaline from the 200m free to push myself in the fly."

Yesterday, Puyallup's Jamie Reid caught Aquazot Nicole Mackey to win the 200m back, but tonight Mackey held off Reid to win the women's 100m back, 1:00.51 to 1:00.59. Andrew Davidson of Excel hit the last turn perfectly to charge past Honza Vitazka to win the men's 100m back in 54.43.

Two swimmers who just missed making the 2000 Olympic team claimed the 400m IM titles tonight with Maggie Bowen of Auburn winning the women's in 4:38.82 and St. Petersburg's Robert Margalis winning the men's in 4:15.70. At the Olympic Trials, Bowen was third in the 200m IM and fourth in in the 400m IM, while Margalis took third in both the 400m and 1500m free and fifth in the 400m IM.
