Seven Titles For Seven Nations (One Each) In Rio

Each one of the seven titles up for grabs at the World Youth Championships in Rio de Janeiro went to a different nation, while China continued to field F stringers.

Poland's MacIej Hreniak clocked 8:04.84 to win the 800m freestyle ahead of Spain's Juan Luis Rodriguez, on 8:06.92, with Italy's Davide Sitti, on 8:09.67 for bronze.

At the other extreme, Yoris Grandjean, of Belgium, is a name to watch for. In 22.74sec, he took the 50m freestyle crown ahead of Russian Serhey Fesikov on 22.92, with the bronze going to South African Wesley Gilchrist 23.19.

Scott Flowers if the US, won the 200m medley in 2:03.62, with Britain's Xavier Mohammed, the only 1990-born male to win a medal today, taking silver in 2:04.69, ahead of Ukraine's Denys Dubrov on 2:04.70.

Edoardo Giorgetti and Luca Pizzini are in line to continue a strong flow of Italian breaststroke men, finishing a close one-two over 200m in 2:15.44 and 2:15.56, with Lithuania's Giedrius Titenis, third on 2:16.57.

Anatstasia Zueva, second to absent Brit Elizabeth Simmonds at the European junior championships, took the 200m backstroke crown in 2:15.27, ahead of France's Ophelie Cyriell Etienne, on 2:16.49, with Chen Wen, of China, third on 2:17.01, a little down on the 2:15.62 she clocked at the China National Games last October, when she finished sixth among those born 1990 or later. No sign of Zhao Jing, born 1990, winner at the China Games on 2:12.89 last October, or Bai Anqui 1993-born and a finalist back in October on 2:14.06, or 1990-born Zhang Lijun Zhe, also a Nanjing finalist on 2:15.09.

European junior champion and world youth champion over 400m medley, Mireia Belmonte, of Spain, took the 400m freestytle in 4:14.29, just 0.16sec ahead of Jessica Rodriguez, of the US, with American teammate Leah Ginarich third just 0.03sec further back. No sign of 1990-born Yang Jieqiao, China Games champion on 4:07.54 last October, or 1990-born Li Mo, second last October in 4:08.07.

Lyubov Korol of Ukraine, at 27.38, claimed gold over 50m butterfly by 0.07sec over Italy's Ilaria Bianchi, whose 27.45 took silver by just 0.03sec over Germany's Lena Celina Hiller.
