Cowgirl Swim Team Victorious Over Air Force

Nov 10, 1999

LARAMIE, Wyo. - In the season opening dual conference meet the University of Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team defeated the Air Force Academy 177-123, Saturday at Corbett Pool.

Seven different Cowgirls recorded first-place finishes against the Falcons. Three athletes were victorious in more than one event. Senior Jessica Schiffl (Spring, Texas) won both the 1000 freestyle (10:37.89) and 500 freestyle (5:24.40), senior Emily Hollon (Laramie, Wyo.) placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:59.15) and 100 freestyle (54.38) and freshman Angie Sax (Memphis, Tenn.) recorded two wins in her first collegiate meet in the 200 butterfly (2:09.48) and 100 butterfly (59.37).

Other first-place finishers for Wyoming were freshman Missy Lewis (100 breaststroke), freshman Darcrea Corey (200 backstroke), senior Jen Weidert (200 breaststroke) and sophomore Jennifer Schurz (200 IM).

Senior Laura Tierney led all UW divers with a second-place finish in the 3-Meter. Junior Wendy O'Connell placed right behind Tierney in the 3-Meter in third-place.

"It was a lot closer than I expected," UW Head Coach Tom Johnson said. "I did not expect us to do what we had to do today to win. I think we took them (Air Force) too lightly and we overlooked them a little bit.

"We're making progress. To be able to keep beating Air Force is a good thing although we need to start beating some team we haven't beaten before."

The women will next dual with Denver University Friday, Nov., 12, in Denver, Colo.
