Wildcat Swimmers Sweep Trojans in Home Opener

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 2-ranked Arizona women's swimming and diving team cruised to a 148-93 victory over the fourth-ranked Trojans today at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, while the No. 4 Arizona men squeaked out a 124-119 victory over the No. 5 Trojan men.

For the women, Arizona freshman Amanda Beard led the way, capturing two event titles (200 IM; 2:02.91 and 200 breast; 2:14.09) and swimming the breaststroke leg of the first-place 400 medley relay squad.

In addition, Beard's time of 2:14.09 broke the school record in the 200 breast, bettering Becky Gumpert's 1994 mark of 2:14.67. Also strong for the Cats was fellow teammate Botsford, who captured the 200 back, in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of
