Swim Coach Banned From U.S.

Jul 14, 1998

Former Canadian Swimming coach Cecil Russell who was banned for life by the Canadian Swimming Federation in 1995 for being found guilty of conspiring to traffic in anabolic steroids, has now found himself banned from the U.S.

Russell had been working in the U.S. for over a year with the Fort Lauderdale Swim Team. The team which is coached by Jack Nelson, was completely unaware of his past history.

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, which had received a tip that Russell had been working in the U.S., contacted John Leonard of the American Swimming Coaches Association to make him aware of Russell's previous conviction and lifetime ban.

Under FINA regulations, all member nations must recognize a sanction imposed by any one nation.
