FINA WORLD CUP 1

COLLEGE PARK - The first stage of the 1999-2000 FINA World Swimming Cup gets underway today, November 17 at College Park, Maryland, home of the University of Maryland. The two day competition is taking place at the Student Recreation Centre (SRC), a US $35-million complex with an indoor 8-lane 50 m pool with a bulkhead set at the 25 m mark. There is an additional warm-up facility 25 yards wide by 8-lanes.

This is the first of 12 World Cups, three in the Americas, two next January in China, two in Australia and five in Europe.

The competition is held over two days, with 17 events each day, prelims get underway at 10 am and finals at 6:30 pm.

At the end of the 12-meet series total prize monies of US $238,000 will be distributed, with the top three scorers in each event awarded $ 4,000, 2,000 and 1,000. Swimmers may compete in any number of meets, but can only accummulate points from six meets. No more than two of the best meet scores in individual events can be counted from zones 1 (Americas) and 2 (Asia/Oceania) and from 3 (Europe) where three competitions can be counted. Each swimmers must compte at least once in two zones.

There is a world record bonus available of $4,000.

The competition has 290 entries from 42 coutries.
