FINA World Cup 5 - Day 1 Report

The first nights highlight was the men's 100 backstroke. A battle among the two fastest backstroker in the world in 1998.

Stev Theloke (GER) has the fastest time of the year and Lenny Krayzelburg (USA) was the World Champion last January in Perth.

Tonights race with Theloke's come from behind finish after Krayzelburg had the lead at the 50 with 25.71 with Theloke turning in 26.08. But he was best on the home stretch to finish with 52.93 to the American's 53.08.

Krayzelburg has been bothered by lower back strain and has a fracture and will be returning home to get treatement. He was scheduled to travel to Australia for the next two legs of the FINA World Cup in Sydney and Hobart next week. He still hopes to compete in the European portion later in February.

Yana Klochkova (UKR) had an easy win in the 200 IM with 2:12.69 over Sue Rolph (GBR) in second with 2:17.43 who is trying to move up in the points race in this category. She now has 40 points and could move up tomorrow on the current leader Ning Bo (CHN) with 46 who is not in Hong Kong. Rolph also took the lead in the sprint free category with 35 points after winning the 50 freestyle in 25.79 and a tie for first place with Sophia Skou (DEN) with the same time.

Other good performances Jens Kruppa (GER) won both men's breaststrokes with 28.21 in the 50 and 2:13.77 in the 200.

Kelly Stefanyshyn (CAN) won both women's backstrokes with 28.97 in the 50 and 2:09.76 in the 200 which established a new national record for Canada.

Notes: A new Hong Kong record for the 50 back: Sherry Tsai Hiu Wai, 29.73 (prelims), and 29.53 in the finals bettering her own previous record of 29.97 also bettered the 200 backstroke record with 2:17.19 improving on her prevous time of 2:17.39 from 1998.
