FIRST JAPANESE WOMAN TO WIN OLYMPIC GOLD
On 11th August, 1936, Hideko Maehata, competing in the Berlin Olympic Games, became the first Japanese woman to win an Olympic swimming title when she captured the 200 meters breaststroke in 3:03.6. Martha Greninger of Germany took the silver medal in 3:04.2, while Denmark's Inge Sorensen was thrird in 3:07.8. The American girls were all eliminated in the preliminaries.
