Germany May Skip European Champs
Apr 9, 1999
The German Swimming Federation President Ruediger Tretow, recently stated that Germany may not attend the European Championships which take place in Istanbul, Turkey July 22 to August 1.
Turkey is currently experiencing a rise in terrorist activities due to its recent arrest of a Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan. Tretow indicated that many athletes feel uneasy about attending and went as far as suggesting that the event possibly be moved.
LEN is expected to make its final decision on the Championships by the end of April while the cities of Vienna, Austria and Munich, Germany have both offered to host the event if it needed to be moved.
