Indiana Handles Ohio State 141.5 - 96.5

Jan 17, 2000

Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana Hoosiers easily defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 141.5-96.5 in their final home dual meet. The Hoosiers won seven of eleven swim events, and one of two diving events.

The Hoosiers wasted no time taking the lead, as Jennifer Cristy anchored the 400 Medley Relay team, coming from behind to clinch the victory.

"Jenn got back in [the race] and really got the whole team going," noted head coach Dorsey Tierney.

Megan Ryther was a double winner for the Hoosiers today. Ryther claimed the 1000 free, in an IU season-best of 10:15.07. Ryther also won the 500 free, leading the Hoosiers to a 1-2-3 finish. Ellie Lallman won the 200 free in a lifetime best of 1:53.05. Cristy was a double winner also. Her times of 23.30 and 50.96 were good enough to take the 50 and 100 free wins. Amanda Noblet won the 200 back in a season-best 2:06.77.

For the divers, Sara Reiling, this week's Big Ten Diver of the Week, won the 1-meter competition with a score of 269.48. In the three-meter competition, Jennifer Sonneborn was the Hoosiers' highest finisher. Her 288.75 was good for second place.

The team honored its senior swimmers Sarah Jacobs and Libbie McCarthy today.

"A change in coaching staff is always hard," said Tierney. "When I came on staff [two years ago] these two were some of my greatest supporters. They continue to be team leaders. Sarah is consistently our toughest swimmer in the pool, in practice she works hard as a team leader. Libbie, obviously as our captain is a real team leader, and has such a great personality. She really makes the underclassmen feel at ease. It will be tough to lose those guys."
