Penn State In Second at Big Ten Championships

Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Penn State men's swimming and diving remains second overall following the second day of competition at the 2000 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. Host school Michigan leads through the second day of action with a total of 437 points. Penn State trails the Wolverines by 59 points with a two-day total of 378.

The Lions' 200 medley relay unit consisting of Josh Weaver (York, Pa.), Matt Teeter (Gettysburg, Pa.), Gavin Carscallen (Calgary, Alberta) and Bob Molettiere (Harleysville, Pa.) highlighted the day for Penn State by winning the Big Ten title on the way to setting a Donald B. Canham Natatorium pool record with their winning time of 1:28.57. The conference title marked the second straight year in which the Lions have captured a conference relay crown. In the day's other relay competition, the 800 freestyle, Penn State's foursome of Holden Comeau (Carlisle, Pa.), Kevin Smith (Havertown, Pa.), Martin Schierhorn (Zappendorf, Germany) and John Retrum (Anderson, Ind.) managed a fourth place showing.

For the second straight day, Penn State placed at least two swimmers in the finals of each individual swimming event and garnered a minimum of 21 points in each of the seven races. The Lions' top individual event performance came in the 200 freestyle. Penn State sported four finalists in the 200 free and scored a total of 42 points. Comeau led the quartet with a third place showing and a time of 1:37.36. Schierhorn recorded a time of 1:38.46, good for sixth place. Retrum and Smith finished ninth and tenth respectively.

Joe Peresan (Lancaster, N.Y.) and Weaver both put together second place swims in separate events. Peresan swam a time of 3:52.87 to touch second in the 400 medley, while Weaver registered a time of 48.67 in placing second in the 100 backstroke. Teeter added a third place swim in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.34.
