Teen swimmer over half-way across Lake Ontario

Aug 4, 2014  - Nikki Dryden

Right now as we get ready for bed in Australia, wake in North America and have lunch in Europe, there is a 14 year old girl who has been swimming across Lake Ontario for over 12 hours in 23 degree water (74F). Despite swimming all night, she is only just over half way to her goal of becoming the youngest swimmer to make the crossing which ranges from 33-57KM.

Her name is Trinity Arsenault and she won't be the first in her family to complete this feat. Her mother Christine made the crossing in 2010 and Trinity watched the current youngest crosser Annelise Carr do it in 2012. Trinity knew then and there it was something she wanted to do too. Born into swimming (and in the pool at 13 days old) Trinity has been training for the crossing specifically since 2012 and cold water training for the last few months. Only 54 people have done it including Marilyn Bell in 1954 who was just 16 when she made the first crossing. Trinity will follow Bell's tradition route and just so there's no doubt of her whereabouts she is being tracked here on Spot.

Sponsored in part by our own Swim-Shop, the grade 8 student is doing all this for the Canadian Tire charity, Jumpstart, which helps kids pay for their training costs and assist with their equipment needs. Raised in a single-parent household where paying swim club fees and getting to the pool has been a challenge, Trinity hopes the money she raises on GoGetFunding will give other families and kids the opportunity to grow and develop in a sport they choose, not just one where funding is available.

Trinity is hoping to raise enough funds to help over 100 children access good programming in their communities. Needed donations to help her reach her fundraising goal can be made here and for updated details on Trinity’s swim you can visit:
