Lijesen Leads The Way With Record Dash

Netherlands: In the 50m backstroke heats at the SwimCup in Eindhoven, Bastiaan Lijesen set a Dutch record of 24.73, inside his 24.79 mark from a year ago, to take the helm of the world rankings 0.03sec ahead of the 24.76 of Aschwin Wildeboer (ESP) at the Spanish Open and the 24.94 of Camille Lacourt (FRA) in Marseilles last month.

USA: Olympic champion Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), Dana Vollmer (Granbury, Texas), Missy Franklin (Centennial, Colo.), Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.), Matt Grevers (Lake Forrest, Ill.) and Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md.) and former Olympic champions Anthony Ervin (Valencia, Calif.) and Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) will compete at the Arena Grand Prix at Mesa, Arizona, from April 11-13. The event is the fourth stop of the six-meet 2012-13 Arena Grand Prix Series and will be held at the Skyline Aquatic Center. The meet will also feature the launch of the “Arena Grand PrixView Featuring Aaron Peirsol,” which offers local youth swimmers, ages 8-12, the chance to compete in a relay event with Olympic gold medalists Aaron Peirsol and Janet Evans. 

Spain: Miguel Rando did a double dash, clocking 24.91 to win the 50m butterfly and 26.21 to win the 50m backstroke as the Spanish University Championships wrapped up in Murcia. Mireia Belmonte  clocked 2:16.08 in the 200m medley and the winning mixed medley team from the Catholic University of Murcia, Melanie Costa, Rando, Yeray Lebon and Belmonte brought the meet to a close.
