Aussies Aim To Get A To In In Turkey

Nov 30, 2012  - Craig Lord

World Cup Champion Kenneth To, with the big $100,000 prize in tow, will lead a 19-strong EnergyAustralia Swim Team at the 11th FINA World Short-Course Championships at the Sinan Erdem Arena, Istanbul, from December 12-15.

Described by his own federation as "the pocket rocket from Sydney", To will compete in the 50m freestyle, 100m butterfly and the 100m and 200m medley. In Dubai two years ago, To fell shy of the podium but intends to change that this time round, saying: “To be able to stand on the podium representing Australia at a World Championship level would be a great achievement. I’m feeling really good after my performance at the World Cup and hopefully my success will be playing on my competitors minds."

Australia will use the championships in Turkey to provide experience for its next wave. While coach Denis Cotterell is in the spotlight these days for his work with China, he also coaches Matt Levings and Jordan Harrison, the distance duo aiming to step up for a country keen not to let a tradition, floated by Kieren Perkins and Grant Hackett in latter years, slip further downstream.
