Nettlefold To Lead; Livingstone Joins Board

Oct 13, 2012

Barclay Nettlefold, a Melbourne businessman, was elected as President of Swimming Australia Ltd at the federation's Annual General Meeting held in Sydney today.

Nettlefold will take over from David Urquhart, the incumbent for the past four years. A director on the SAL board for the last 15 months, Nettlefold has been elected for a two-year term with Olympian Nicole Livingstone, Gary Barclay and Graeme Johnson also elected onto the board of Swimming Australia.

Nettlefold said: "I’m extremely proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to lead our sport at this time, and would like to thank the stakeholders for their support. There are some great people involved in our sport from the volunteer level at every club in the country, to coaches and administrators, and of course the athletes.

"Swimming is a sport of huge national interest and has a proud history of success in and out of the water. We face some challenges at the moment, most evidently in performance, but with every challenge there is an opportunity to improve.

"The review into our sport is already underway and I’m encouraging the stakeholders within our sport to embrace it."

Livingstone, Olympic and world-championship medallist, brings to the board experience of an athlete but also knowledge of broadcast media through her 16 years of TV and radio work since retiring from elite racing. Nunawading Swim Club's CEO, Gary Barclay, was re-elected for a further term.

Graeme Johnson is a former president of Kawana Waters Swim Club and the Northern Suburbs Swimming Association and has worked as a Chief Financial Officer across a broad spectrum of industries, diverse in size from small to Top 10 ASX companies.
