The Olympic Games are done but the next generation is already stepping up to challenge the order of things: Akihiro Yamaguchi clocked 2:07.84 in the 200 breaststroke at the Japan Inter-High School Championships.

The time is the best ever by a Japanese swimmer in textile, better than Kosuke Kitajima's 2:08.00 standard, and third fastest this year after Hungarian Daniel Gyurta's world-record London 2012 win in 2:07.28 and the 2:07.43 in which Britain's Michael Jamieson almost caused upset as the hosts' best performer at the Games. The bronze at London 2012 went to Ryo Tateishi in 2:08.29, that locking Kitajima out by a whisker.

Yamaguchi had already shown promise, his previous best a 2:09.22. Next stop, Kitajima's shiny suited national record of 2:07.51, the previous world mark.
