Sarah Sjoestrom, the Swedish 'fly and free ace who took two weeks off at Christmas in the face of convention as world-class swimmers approach Olympic season, set a Swedish short-course record of 52.15 in the 100m free at junior nationals in Valby, the time 0.02sec inside the standard set by world s/c champion of 12 years ago, Therese Alshammar.
Late last year, Sjoestrom took down Alshammar's Swedish long-course record after having spent the past 18 months breaking out of her butterfly form to emerge as a freestyler capable of winning big honours over 100m and 200m at London 2012.
The latest effort of Sjoestrom, fresh back home from a training camp in Tenerife, makes her 9th best ever in a textile suit. In the Valby race, Michelle Coleman clocked 52.96 for second ahead of 15-year-old Louise Hansson, on 53.73.
