Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED) has left hospital in Tenerife to rejoin her teammates before the Dutch squad head home - but the 2010 leading freestyle sprinter has been forced to abandon her European Championships campaign for Budapest next month.
Kromowidjojo was hospitalised after being diagnosed with viral meningitis while on camp with the Dutch team bound for Budapest via final preparations in Tenerife last week. Doctors have allowed her to leave the hospital today in time to rejoin her teammates for the journey back to Europe tomorrow.
However, while the swimmer is on the mend, she will not make it to Budapest, Jacco Verhaeren, Dutch head coach, tells Swimnews. "We decided definitly not to race in Budapest. The medical advice is clearly to take it easy for a while, so racing doesn't fit in that plan, but we expect to start the new season as planned in September."
Second to Therese Alshammar (SWE) on the 2010 50m free world rankings, Kromowidjojo has raced three times inside her 2009 best time over one lap this season. In the 100m, she stands out again with 5 entries in the best 25 efforts of the year, from 53.44 to 54.68.
We wish Kromowidjojo well at a time when a season that promised so much has been brought to a premature end.
