Hospitalised Kromowidjojo Stable

Jul 24, 2010  - Craig Lord

Ranomi Kromowidjojo remains in hospital in Tenerife, where the Dutch European Championships squad has been training, and is being treated for viral meningitis. "At the moment her condition is stable but still really painful," Dutch head coach Jacco Verhaeren told SwimNews.

Unlike bacterial meningitis, the condition is no threat to the other members of the Dutch team. Verhaeren explained that the sprinter complained of a severe headache, back and neck pain last Thursday morning, resulting in a decision to take her to hospital.

"Although we didn't take the descision wether to swim or not in Budapest [as yet], you will understand the chance of that is close to zero," Verhaeren explained with a nod to European titles that start on August 9 in Budapest. Kromowidjojo will be hospitalised until at least next Friday, while the Dutch are hopeful of the swimmer being able to travel home with the squad next Saturday.

Verhaeren confirmed that the Netherlands will field a 4x100m free team in Budapest, but with Marleen Veldhuis a young mum, Inge Dekker out for now and recovering from shoulder injury, and now Kromowidjojo, also a title hope over 50m and 100m free, highly unlikely to race in Hungary, Dutch hopes of retaining the crown are slim.

SwimNews wishes Kromowidjojo a speedy recovery from a nasty ailment that could hardly have come at a worst moment in terms of the swimmer's long-term progress through the world sprint ranks.
