Thighs And Lows For Gilot & Magnini

Aug 31, 2011

News Round-Up:

France: Fabien Gilot is undergoing treatment to strengthen one of his thighs after muscle tissue was damaged during an accident on holiday last year. The sprinter, a member of the silver-medal winning 4x100m French quartets at world titles in Shanghai last month, estimated that he will be back to full physical strength within three weeks.

Italy: Former world 100m freestyle champion Filippo Magnini is back in the news after being photographed flirting with Federica Pellegrini at world titles last month. No consequence for the Italian Olympic champion but for Magnini the moment has cost him the woman he might have married. Italian papers today have Christina Nardini, the swimmer's girlfriend before the photos emerged from Shanghai, saying: "Filippo was all ready for the wedding, we had set the date and bought a house, we also wanted a son … but I could not forgive a betrayal. I was too disappointed." On the one hand, Magnini, she tells the media, has told her that he misses her and that he had made it clear to Pellegrini that there would be no relationship. On the other hand, Nardini had found an invitation to dine with Pellegrini hidden in a book belonging to Magnini. "For me, its all over. I ran out in tears, I was very ill, I lost six pounds. Now, I'm calm and I want to start over and don't want for suitors."

USA: distance legend Janet Evans had a nice early morning surprise for her 40th birthday: a 6am wake-up call from anti-doping testers. The 1988 and 1992 Olympic champion is back racing in masters events and aims to make the grade for the US Olympic trials in 2012. As such, she must be available for testing wherever and whenever.

FINA: The new team director for USA Swimming, Frank Busch has joined the FINA Coaches Commission for 2011-2013, replacing the man he replaced in the top performance job in the US, Mark Schubert.
