The new technical director of French Swimming is Christian Donze. He replaces the outgoing director Claude Fauquet, who held the post during eight years of impressive progress in the pool for les bleus aquatiques.

Donze, 48 this year, was selected from seven candidates for the top job. He was considered to be the best man to consolidate Fauquet's work and take it to the next stage.

Married and the father of three children, Donze, from Montbéliard, has been teacher, coach, corodinator, administrator and manager in the world of sport since the mid 1980s after an international career as a swimmer.

In 2008 he was in charge of the French junior team at the World Youth Championships, while the period of 2002 to 2008 saw him undertake several roles that included talent ID, altitude training and youth team management.

As a swimmer, Donze, who speaks English, held the French 200m butterfly record and won 19 medals at the French national championships. He also raced for France at the World University Games in Kobe in the early 1980s. During military service he raced at the World Military Games in 1983.

Meantime, here's an example of the sort of progress made in France over the past five Olympic cycles:

Women 4x200m freestyle
All-time world ranking/nation/time/gap to world record/national record improvement in four-year cycle (the 2008 time driven, of course, in part by the technology on their skins).
