Cameron Van Der Burgh is on fire: at the Arena World Cup in Moscow, the South Afrtican 20-year-old cracked a 56.88sec world short-course record. The standard had stood to American Ed Moses in 57.47 since 2002.

Van der Burgh, who broke the 50m world record on Saturday, split 26.56 and came home in 30.32. In his wake were Igor Borysik (UKR), in 57.94, and Christian Sprenger (AUS), on 58.05.

Van der Burgh, who was coached by Dirk Lange at the national training centre in Pretoria until recently, when the German returned to Europe, has made giant strides of late but his effort in Moscow blows away all that went before. Here are his best 10 times now:

  • 56.88: Nov, 2008
  • 57.92: April, 2008
  • 57.99: Oct, 2008
  • 58.19: Nov, 2009
  • 58.70: Nov, 2007
  • 58.87: April, 2008
  • 59.24: Nov, 2007
  • 59.26: April, 2008
  • 59.65: Nov, 2007
  • 59.82: May 2007

Valentina Artemyeva (RUS), who set a European record of 1:04.71 to win the 100m breaststroke on Saturday, took the 50m in another continental best, of 29.86, the fastest ever swum during the world cup. She later finished second in the 200m in 2:22.54. The 200m winner was teammate Olga Detenyuk, in 2:21.70, while third place went to Vitalina Simonova, on 2:24.48, the 1-2-3 result reflecting the level of entry to some extent but evoking memories of the 1976 and 1980 era, when Russian women took all Olympic medals on 200m breaststroke.

Artemyeva's best 50m was a 30.78, clocked in October, and before that, a 31.28. Now she is second-fastest ever. The European standard had stood to Emma Igelstrom, the former world record holder from Sweden, in 29.96 since 2002 - that effort clocked in the very same pool in Moscow. The world cup best had belonged to world record holder and Olympic champion Leisel Jones (AUS), in 30.03.

Detenyuk, 15, is one of several Russian women making big strides at the Moscow round of the cup: her previous best was a 2:25.05. Not bad progress. Not quite as big as that of 22-year-old Artemyeva, who in October clocked a lifetime best of 2:27.06.

When pressed, Oussama Mellouli, 24, responds: the Tunisian took the 1,500m freestyle in 14:34.31 ahead of 21-year-old Vitaliy Romanovich (RUS) in 14:40.46. The Russian stayed in contention with the Olympic champion until the 1,000m mark, after which Mellouli's pace proved too hot. Mellouli was back in later to win the 200m medley in 1:55.10, 0.32sec ahead of South African Darian Townsend.

The Arena World Cup now moves to Stockholm midweek and concludes in Berlin next weekend.
