"Water for Life", a swim event to help raise funds for Ryan’s Well Foundation (http://www.ryanswell.cal) is underway. The Foundation’s mission is to provide clean water, improved sanitation and related hygiene education to citizens of developing countries through engagement and teamwork with local partners while empowering youth, say organisers.

One of several events that the world swimming community might be able to help out with. Here's what organisers of the swim have to say:

"Kohala’s Project Venture (KPV) in concert with their “Kokua from Kohala” year-long service project to aid the people of Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, is coordinating the event.

"KPV strives to build a strong and healthy Kohala community by instilling an ethic of service in our youth.  Service to others provides a greater perspective on the students’ own lives and community by connecting them to people and places they would otherwise not know.  Providing opportunities for youth to gain awareness beyond themselves is crucial for their emotional and social development.  Through this, students are empowered with the knowledge that they are capable, valuable, and important contributors to society.

"Participants of all age levels and abilities will be seeking sponsors to pledge per length or flat rate for their swim.  Entrants may swim at any 25 or 50-yard pool of their choice between September 20th-October 18th.  There will be an awards ceremony on “Make a Difference Day” October 25 at 4pm. at Kamehameha Park playground. All swimmers inside and outside of Kohala may participate

"There will be array of winner categories including age groups for male and females, oldest and youngest swimmers, swimmer raising the most money and swimming the most lengths.

"In addition to raising funds to help others in need we hope this will enthuse people to get into better shape by swimming and of course have fun while doing it.

"Participation forms may be obtained by calling KPV @ 889-5852 or by contacting co-chairs, Genevieve Boyle or Rico Bowman at the middle school or Shaelynne Lloyd at the high school. Forms can be sent on line. Please e mail KPV@ikealapono@gmail.com and request “Water For Life” forms.
