Cielo Throws Down A 21.58 Gauntlet

Brazil: World champion Cesar Cielo clocked 21.58 in the heats of the 50m free at the Maria Lenk Trophy in Rio this morning. The world record holder will be flanked in the final by Europe-based Bruno Fratus, 21.98, and Alan Vitoria, on 22.21.

In the finals last night, Rio time, Olympic silver medallist over 400IM in London, Thiago Pereira practised a quarter of his strength on day 2 at the Maria Lenk Trophy in Rio with a 53.11 victory in the 100m butterfly after a 52.96 in the heats. The minor spoils were a blink away, Arthur Mendes on 53.14 and Kaio Almeida on 53.17. Gabriel Souza, based at Davie Nadadores in Florida, claimed gold at the helm of a similarly tight tussle, his 2:13.42 in the 200m breaststroke pipping national record holder Henrique Barbosa (2:08.44 from a time of shiny suits) by 0.06sec, his 2:13.48 in turning keeping Tales Cerdeira at bay by 0.06sec, on 2:13.54. Felipe Lima was locked out in 2:14.47. In other action, Dutch sprinter Inge Dekker got the edge over Daynara Paula in the 100m butterfly 59.12 to 59.61, Daniele Jesus on 1:00.04. Martin Naidlich, of Argentina, took the 1500 freestyle in a South American record of 15:10.24, inside FINA A cut for Barcelona and ahead of Argentina's former national record holder Juan Pereyra, on 15:19.87 (inside the 15:21.92 at which he had held the Argentinian mark) and Brazil's Luiz Arapiraca, on 15:22.95. In the midst of battle, Arapiraca lost his status as South American record holder, his 15:12.69 from 2011 over taken by the new personal best of Naidlich, 22 and up from a previous high of 15:39.88.

USA: USA Swimming and the United States Olympic Committee will announce the host city for the 2016 US Olympic Team Trials on April 27, this Saturday. The three cities still in the race: Omaha, Neb; San Antonio, Texas; St. Louis, Mo.
