Lawrence Up For Senior Aussie Of Year

Jan 25, 2013  - Craig Lord

Laurie Lawrence, a former Aussie national team coach who counts more than 30 Olympic medals among his personal charges, is a nominee for Senior Australian of the Year 2013 as the brain behind a Kids Alive (Do the Five) safety awareness campaign.

His mission caught the wave on safety Down Under with a catchy song that appeals to children and tells them of the high five that saves lives: “Fence the pool, shut the gate, teach your kids to swim its great, supervise and watch your mate and learn how to resuscitate”.

Backed with Federal Government funding, Lawrence, 71, produced a Living with Water DVD that is given to fist-time mothers in hospital in Australia. Lawrence's work has made a significant contribution to a fall in garden pool drownings.

His aim: zero pre-school drownings.
