The British Nationals, which were also the English Commonwealth Trials are covered this issue in a report from Anita Lonsbrough. Sue Rolph, on our cover, bettered the 50 free and 200 I.M. British records and tied the 100 free. She'll be favoured in the sprint freestyle at the Commonwealth Games in September.

Russ Ewald profiles precocious Carly Geehr who at age 12 last year was already a finalist at the Summer U.S. Nationals. She is coached by two-time Canadian Olympian Gary Anderson in Pasadena, CA. And Gary's old coach, Paul Bergen, was just inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Cecil Colwin writes on the current state of the sport of swimming. It is a puzzle with few people having pieces, and the overall picture is impossible to see.

Karin Helmstaedt reports on the on-going German Trials that are attracting worldwide attention.

Former SWIM Magazine features editor Patricia Young, has been giving the trials extensive coverage recently in the Globe and Mail, where she is Deputy Sports Editor, a position she started in May after four years in Hong Kong.

George Block writes on the long process in U.S. Swimming to arrive at a solution to the problem of the Winter / Spring U.S. Nationals. A national club championships is proposed with regional qualifying meets, replacing the current Junior Nationals.

Byron MacDonald tackles a somewhat related topic in the Canadian context-moving the Summer Nationals to very early July to allow everyone a break during the summer period. Only those selected to whatever international activity is scheduled would continue training. This would fit in well with the increased emphasis on National Training Centres.

We have received by mail, courier, and the internet all provincial championship with the exception of Newfoundland, held last May. These were sent but what arrived was the entry list rather than the results. TAG times are up-to-date including the Eastern Cup held in Montreal, July 23-26.

If your time is missing please contact us immediately. Don't leave it for later, as the season ends following Junior and Senior Nationals. If you plan to compete in the U.S. during August, or before, and want your times listed, send us the results.

The final TOP program for the year is on page 16-17 and if you'd like to take part next season and don't have entry forms, please drop us a line to be added to the list of clubs.

Paul Quinlan, our Australian Editor, has provided Australian age group rankings in 50 m pools. You can check the competition you'll be up against in a few years.
