Finding The Right Environment

Neil Harvey

Four coaches in three years have taught 18-year-old Karine Chevrier of Montreal a lot about swimming. After qualifying for the Pan Pacific meet in the 200 freestyle, Karine has found a home. "After Pierre Lafontaine left I went to Calgary to swim with Deryk. After the trials I came home and trained with Alex Sereno for the summer. Then Claude St. Jean arrived at CAMO in September and I've had the best year of my career."

Karine had some excellent in-season results with a 2.18 for the 200 IM. This gave her some confidence coming into the Nationals. "I was very confident after the swims in Europe but I am very surprised with my 200 freestyle. We almost decided to scratch the event. I am very glad we did not! I could hardly sleep last night."

The trip to Japan is Karine's first national team and it was a big step for her to get here. "Swimming is fun for me. I am confident and relaxed, especially after the 200 free. I can hardly believe I've reached my dream goal." Karine plans to continue training with Claude for the next three years. "I want to swim a best time on the relay in Japan and next year my goal is to make the Commonwealth Games team. I feel I've found my place." The right environment sure makes a difference.
