Major competitions in Australia and the United States are covered this month. And as we have done for 23 years, the 50 best TAG times for the short course take up a 16-page section.

Paul Quinlan reports on the Australian Pan Pacific Trials and the emergence of a new generation of tough young Australian distance swimmers.

We cover the NCAA championships in greater depth since they involve a large contingent of foreign swimmers including many Canadians. Six of the eight finalists in the women's 200 I.M. were non-Americans and two Canadians, Shannon Skaespeare and Marylyn Chiang, finished 2-3. The NCAA plans to go metric at least in 2000 (Olympic year). That will be something to look forward to.

A feature on one of the newer stars of American swimming - Jennifer Parmenter - winner of the 200-400 I.M. last February at the Phillips 66 Nationals, was written by new contributor Russ Ewald. He brings many years of experience covering world and American swimming, including the 1988 and 1992 Olympics and all major competitions during that period.

Anita Lonsbrough caught up with Chinese 1994 World Champion Bin Lu, who was involved in the Asian Games scandal, where nine Chinese swimmers received two year suspensions. She denies ever taking anything.

Neil Harvey has written about the very successful Canadian Rowing program and explains their structure with some obvious comparisons to swimming.

Cecil Colwin writes about the 50-year saga of the breaststroke rules. This is the first of a three-part story. Future installments will deal withthe separation of the breast and butterfly and the on-going muddle in the wording of the breaststroke rules.

Karin Helmstaedt profiles Australian backstroker Adrian Radley, who has blossomed since being coached by former Canadian Jim Fowlie, now of the Australian Institute of Sport. Her second profile is of Brazilian Ana Caterina Azevedo, whose quest for an Olympic berth was unsuccsessful, but in retirement has plans to help women athletes in Brazil.

Those who called, faxed, and notified us about missing TAG times can relax. All the provincial meets took place the first two weekends of March. Results arrived almost at the same time. In order to get the March issue out, only top performances from all these provincial meets were entered.

It took two more weeks to complete entering all these meets. It's all done now. But only meets up to March 9. Subsequent competitions are not recorded.

As this is the end of the short course season - send only long course meets from now on.
