WHEN IS A RECORD NOT A RECORD
Anita Lonsbrough
Mark Foster was back in action just four days after qualifying for the British
Olympic team. This time he was chasing records and the rewards that go with
them.
The former 50 freestyle World Short Course Champion and record-holder was
seeking to add a world record for the 50 butterfly to his world short course
mark. A bonus of about 20,000 pounds (about $41,000 Can) was on offer if
he could dip inside the unofficial world best of 24.27 seconds, held by
Sweden's Jan Karlson.
Urged on by a partisan crowd, Mark shaved one-fifth of a second off when
he touched home in 24.07 seconds. Before he receives the bonus of a car
and the cash, it needs to be ratified as a world record.
A virtual impossibility as FINA does not recognize world records in the
stroke 50s long course.
It is not even the fastest time, as Byron Davies split 24.05 on his way
to the 100 fly at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Unfortunately for Bryon, he could
only finish fourth behind John Hargis.
