Istanbul, World Short-Course Championships, Day 2 finals:

Men's 100m backstroke

Matt Grevers (USA) claimed the Olympic crown from the front in London but found himself trailing in third at the half-way turn here in the little pool in Istanbul. Not that there was much in it but the giant would not yield. On 23.94 to 23.61 and 23.73 for Guilherme Guido (BRA) and defending champion Stanislav Donets (RUS) respectively, Grevers drove off the wall and fought every stroke of the way to a 49.89 victory that came down to the touch 0.02sec ahead of Donets. The bronze went to Guido in 50.50. That locked out Aussies Ashley Delaney, 50.61, and Robert Hurley, 50.63.

The result:

  • Grevers 23.94 49.89 (25.95)
  • Donets 23.73 49.91 (26.18)
  • Guido 23.61 50.50 (26.89)

  • Camille Lacourt (FRA) 49.80
  • Ashwin Wildeboer (ESP) 50.04
