World Cup 1 in Rio - Day 1 Prelims

The first stage of the 2000-2001 FINA Swimming World Cup got underway at 5pm on Friday, November 10 in Rio de Janeiro.

18 countries are taking part for a total 185 swimmers. The highlight of this first session were two new South American and Brazilian records.

In the 50 breaststroke by Eduardo Fischer with 28.00, bettered the old South American record of 28.12 by Sergio Fereyra, ARG from 1998.

In the men's 100 individual medley Jose de Souza with 56.66 bettered the old record of 56.69 by Stephan Baptista from 1998. Baptista qualified 6th today with 58.37.

Morgan Knabe, CAN, a finalist in the men's 100 breaststroke

Cristina Teuscher, USA, bronze medallist in the 200 IM
Sarah Poewe, RSA, finalist in the women's 100-200 breaststroke
