Nov 16, 2012  - Craig Lord

The morning after setting a world short-course record of 3:32.25 over 400m freestyle at French nationals in Angers, Yannick Agnel has just taken down the European s/c 800m freestyle record in the fastest of the morning heats (fastest eight go tonight): his 7:29.17 effort is the second fastest ever in textile after Australian Grant Hackett's 7:25.28 from 2001.

It also takes the French 200m Olympic champion inside the European mark of 7:31.18, held by Italian Federico Colbertaldo since 2009 on the eve of a ban on non-textile bodysuits.

  • Agnel's splits: 52.93; 1:49.93; 2:47.14; 3:44.28; 4:41.32; 5:37.92; 6:34.423; 7:29.17.

He had no short-course listing over 800m, while his long-course best, from February 2010 is an 8:09.90. The 100m free heats were also held this morning in Angers - Agnel fourth through to the final in 48.42 - while the 200m is scheduled for Sunday.
