Indiana Swims Away With Invite Title

Nov 20, 2000

Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana Invite lived up to its name this weekend as the No.20 Hoosiers dominated the field in winning with 1,151 points. Their nearest competitor was No. 17 Notre Dame at 763. No. 21 Miami finished in third with 495.

Jenn Cristy was one of the many highlights on the final day of competition. After a disappointing 50-yard free loss on Friday, Cristy returned today with her best 100-yard free performance of the season. Her 100 free in 50.88 was her fifth victory of the weekend. Her sixth came in the 400-yard free relay.

"Jenn had a great meet," said head coach Dorsey Tierney. "I think she finally decided to get up and swim a little bit freer and allow herself to be in a position to win. I haven't seen that a whole this year, but her 100 freestyle tonight was probably her second-best unshaved time ever. If you asked me two weeks ago if she could do that, I would have said no way. She made huge steps today, probably bigger than anyone in the pool."

"I didn't think I was going to be that relaxed," said Cristy. "I just wanted to redeem myself after the 50 freestyle, which I have done in the past three meets. I was very happy to win. It's the first time in a while where I've hit the wall and said 'yeah!'" Anne Williams followed Cristy in the 100 free for third and Susan Woessner finished eighth after taking second in the 200 back. Tina Gretlund swam an NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 200 fly at 2:02.93, her second best collegiate time.

"Tina is pretty much on fire right now. She's been very consistent in practice and in meets. Tina has a classic, beautiful butterfly. Technically, it's very, very sound. She is very experienced in her racing, knows when to go and when to pull back," said Dorsey. "It's beginning to show as she is freeing herself up and swimming with a lot more confidence."

Indiana's 400 free relay won by 3.11 seconds. Williams swam the first leg and built a lead that was never relinquished. With Sarah Fiden swimming second, the lead had grown to 2.06 seconds with 200 yards to go. Gretlund and Cristy dropped the field finishing in 3:30.76.

Fiden took third in the 1650 free in 17:05.15, followed by Megan Ryther, Erin Rice, and Jenny Bechem in fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively.

Cincinnati (401), Evansville ( 383), Southern Illinois (301), and Illinois (269) completed the team competition. Tennessee diving collected 120 points and unattached Miami had seven.
