UCLA Wins Northwestern Invitational

The top-ranked UCLA swimming and diving team won the Northwestern Invitational after posting 1,146.50 points to claim the team title. The invitational's host, Northwestern, finished second with 939.50, followed by South Carolina who scored 492. Ohio State placed fourth with 376 points.

The Bruins led after the second day of competition with a score of 735 points. UCLA claimed titles in eight individual events and all five relay events. UCLA swept four individual events, the 50 Free, 100 Fly, and the one and three-meter diving event.

Freshman Sara Platzer and senior Beth Goodwin each won two individual events. Both swimmers joined Erica Shugart and LeAnne Cadag to capture the 400 Free relay in 3:28.59.

Platzer won the 50 Free (23.54) and the 100 Free (50.54), while Goodwin captured the 100 Fly (55.57) and the 200 Fly (2:01.68). Other event winners included Erin Zehntner in 500 Free (4:54.42) and Cadag in the 100 Breast (56.77).

Other notable performances included: Brighid Dwyer in the 100 Fly (2nd, 56.74) and 100 Back (3rd, 58.13), Jen Noddle in the 200 Breast (2nd, 2:19.12) and 200 IM (3rd, 2:05.99); Brooke Winkler in the 200 IM (2nd, 2:04.45), and Shugart in the 50 Free (2nd, 23.64)

Regan Gosnell continued her sensational diving as she took the one and three-meter titles with a score of 240.85 and 511.10, respectively. Her point total in the three-meter established a new Northwestern Pool record.

The Bruins swept both events as Anne Baghramian finished second in both events as she scored 236.25 in the three-meter and 456.05 in the one-meter. Freshman Michelle Brown was just as impressive after finishing third in both the one-meter (234.75) and three-meter (433.40). Kasey Reinhard finished sixth on both the one-meter (213.10) and three-meter (388.35).
