Colgate Men Record Sweep Of Dual Meets While Women Split

Nov 22, 2000

Hamilton, NY - On the women's side, Emily Pearson set a school record in the 200 butterfly 2:08.56 eclipsing the previous mark set by Kristin Keiser in 1982. While, Elizabeth Gaffuri set the new Lineberry Natatorium record in the 200 freestyle 1:53.99 eclipsing the previous record held by Barone (Lehigh) 1998.

Sophomore Meredith Erickson swam well making ECAC Automatic cuts in the 50 free 25.16 (AC is 25.39) and the 100 free 54.57 (AC is 54.69). Women's multiple event winners were sophomore Emily Pearson '03 1000 free & 200 fly, sophomore Elizabeth Gaffuri '03 200 & 100 free, and freshman Alissa Bell 1m & 3m diving.

Sophomore James Hadley led the way for the men's team in its sweep winning the 400 medley relay, 50 free & 200 fly. While senior Jeff Cowan captured the 1000 & 500 free, freshman Grant Winters won the 200 & 100 free, and sophomore Matt Vuturo won the 400 Medley Relay & 200 IM.

Coach Roberts' thoughts on the Men's Meet:

"We were expecting a very close meet. There were some key races that were going to be close going into the meet based of of each team's season's best times to date. Jeff Cowan and Andy Freeth both did better than expected versus UNH to finish 1st & 3rd. These two set the tone for the remainder of the meet. Each of our 11 swimmers continued to exceed what we expected going into the meet. The result was two victories and numerous season best performances."

Coach Roberts' thoughts on the Women's Meet:

"The 1000 free was the key event early on for Colgate. Emily Pearson and Kay Smith out-dueled UNH's two distance swimmers to finish 1-2. Elizabeth then followed with a big swim in the 200 free....that turned out to be a new pool record. Alice Garnett won a very close race in the 200 IM and then Emily Pearson followed up with record setting performance in the 200 butterfly.

"Though we did win the meet last year, I did not expect to have a close meet this year, again, based off of this season's times to date. But after the Pearson won the 200 fly breaking an 18 year old school record, and Elizabeth then won the 100 free in a season best time of 52.50, we had the lead. UNH and Colgate basically exchanged punches until the final relay. Going into the 400 freestyle relay, we had to finish 1st & 3rd to come out with a 1 point victory."

"It was one of the loudest, most electric events I have ever witnessed in a dual meet. Despite a four second drop to finish 3:38.18, UNH just touched us out to seal their victory."

"Though we would have preferred to finish the day with two wins, the women's team swam like champions. Almost every single swimmer turned in at least one season best time. The team is swimming very well as we head into our final two meets of the semester."
