Wisconsin Women Fall to Illinois

Nov 23, 2000

MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's swimming and diving team (4-3) couldn't contain the Illinois' swimmers as the Panthers were defeated 134-89 Saturday. UWM earned five top spots in the meet, three of which Jen Kedinger contributed.

The freshman swimmer from Fond du Lac, Wis. finished first in the 200 free and 500 free and teammed with freshman Sarah Caldwell (West Bend, Wis./West), freshman Sarah Walby (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) and junior Kelly Goetsch (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) for the victory in the 400 free realy.

In the meet overall, the women were unable to play catch up with the Redbirds, who took an early 28-8 lead after the first two events. The Panthers gained a little ground in the third event when Kedinger won, but the next six events were dominated by ISU as they captured the top two spots in each event.

Winning the last four events still wasn't enough for the Panthers as they fell short in Illinois.

Other top places for the Panthers included sophomore diver Krystina Herzog (Racine, Wis./Horlick) in the three-meter event and freshman Kristin Cefalu (Janesville, Wis./Milton) in the 200 breast.

The women divers are next in competition Nov. 30 at the Notre Dame Invitational and the swimmers hit the water Dec. 1 at the Wheaton College Invitational. The men's team will compete in both events as well.
