Cowgirls Cruise To Victory Over Northern Colorado

Nov 24, 2000

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team dominated Northern Colorado Monday evening in a dual meet at Corbett Pool in Laramie, winning every event on its way to a convincing 202-94 victory.

The Cowgirls, who improved their season dual record to 3-0 overall, swept the top three places in six of 16 events against the Bears. UW's women also had five athletes win two events each.

Senior Wendy O'Connell swept the diving events with season best scores, winning the 1-meter with a score of 246.23 and the 3-meter with a score of 249.45.

In the swimming events, sophomore Mabry Fiddler won both the 500 free (5:15.17) and 1000 free (10:49.82). Fiddler's times in both events were also season bests. Freshman Lauren Bush took top honors in the 100 free (55.20) and the 200 free (1:59.25). Sophomore Angie Sax won both butterfly events, winning the 100 fly with a season best time of 57.87 and the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.48. Freshman Crystal Mecham swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 breast with a season best time of 1:07.64 and the 200 breast (2:27.42).

Other winners against UNC for Wyoming were sophomore Jody Riskowski in the 100 back (59.72), sophomore Ryan Springer in the 50 free (25.67), freshman Janelyn Lilly in the 200 back (2:12.63) and junior Jennifer Schurz in the 200 IM (2:18.60).

"I wasn't so surprised with the outcome because we saw this team two days ago in Denver, but a year ago it seemed like we had a much closer meet," said Wyoming head swimming coach Tom Johnson. "However, it's always great to get a win and gain some confidence."

"We are still pretty beat up with injuries and I hope we can just get healthy here in the next few weeks before our schedule begins getting more challenging towards the second half of our season.

"The newcomers have done very well so far this season. It's a young team but the sophomores are starting to develop and have some more leadership in the team. All the young ladies are starting to really come together as a team and I've really been able to see that this past week with the DU meet last Friday and again here tonight." said Johnson.

Both the women's and men's teams will take a couple weeks off from competition before they travel to Seattle, Wash., Dec. 1 for the Husky Invite.
