Costa Brava As 'Knackered' Becky Bows Out

Barcelona, Mare Nostrum Tour, day 2 finals:

Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington (GBR) clocked 4:09 to lead the way in 400m free heats before she tweeted "I'm knackered!" and opted out of racing the final, a sub-8:20 in the 800m in the midst of sets of 30x100m free and so forth accomplishing the mission she came for. 

That left the way clear for Melanie Costa to end the meet on a high for Spain with a dominant 4:06.83 win, off a 2:02.98 half-way split. Next home were Brit Jazmin Carlin, on 4:10.52 as she prepares for English nationals later this month and a last chance of making the Olympic squad, and Canada's Barbara Jardin, on 4:11.71.

Men's 1500m freestyle

Former European champion Sebastien Rouault (FRA) and 20-year-old South African Devon Brown raced stroke for stroke until the 1250m mark, when the Frenchman piled on the pressure to open up a 1.79sec with 100m to go. The tussle for gold won, Rouault brought the race to an end in 15:17.91, Brown on 15:22.51, the man who had raced alongside them until 1150m, Jack Burnell, a 19-year-old racing for Loughborough, one of Britain's Intensive Training Centres, third in 15:24.42.

Men's 400m medley 

Luca Marin (ITA) took the lead at 150m and never looked back, his 4:15.69 keeping at bay Brits Matthew Johnson, 17, and an Olympic team member feeling the weights of heavy work, Roberto Pavoni, on 4:20.38 and 4:20.41 respectively.

Women's 100m freestyle

Victoria Poon (CAN) took her second sprint win of the meet with a 55.42 win over Jessica Lloyd (GBR), the baby of the British Olympic squad at 16 and on 55.49, with third place going to former world champion Hanna-Maria Seppala (FIN) in 55.79, that locking out another Brit Olympic team member, Rebecca Turner, on 55.84.

Men's 100m backstroke

Ben Treffers (AUS) dominated the final in 54.46 after turning second in 26.79, to a 26.66 split for Britain's 200m winner yesterday Chris Walker-Hebborn. On the way home, Treffers was the sole sub-28sec swimmer, on 27.67, Charl Crous (RSA) second in 55.56, Miguel Rando (ESP) third in 55.61, Walker-Hhebborn locked out by 0.01sec.  

Women's 100m breaststroke

Marina Garcia (ESP) completed a clean sweep of breaststroke events with a 1:09.19 win over Stacey Tadd (GBR), 1:09.43, and Kierra Smith (CAN), 1:09.92. Yesterday, Garcia became the first Spanish woman to race 200m inside 2:25.

Men's 50m freestyle

Brent Hayden (CAN) clocked 22.47 to take the dash ahead of Hanser Garcia (CUB), on 22.63, and Sergiy Fesikov (RUS), on 22.64, the order of the podium matching that in the 100m yesterday.

Women's 200m backstroke

Canada's Sinead Russell led from start to finish in a tight race with Karin Prinsloo (RSA) that ended 2:11.20 to 2:11.73 in the North American's favour. The winner's teammate, Barbara Jardin took third in 2:12.56, locking out Brit medley Olympic teamster Aimee Wilmott, on 2:12.81, her teammate Georgia Hohmann on 2:13.60.

Men's 200m breaststroke

Michael Jamieson, who earned his place on the home Games squad with a sub-2:10 effort back in March, led from blocks to a 2:11.21 victory ahead of two teammates, medley ace James Goddard on a fab 2:13.68, that just pipping winner of the Brit trials earlier in the season, Andrew Willis, on 2:13.86.

Women's 200m butterfly

Having warmed up with second and third place in the dash, Katerina Savard (CAN) and Jemma Lowe (GBR) battled stroke for stroke to a 2:10.03 to 2:10.18 conclusion in the Canadian's favour, medley ace Hannah Miley (GBR) close by for third in 2:11.01, with Audrey Lacroix completing the Canada Vs GBR tussle on 2:11.80.

Men's 100m butterfly 

Jason Dunford, the Kenyan fresh back in the ADN Project from Stanford, turned first in 24.26 on the way to a 52.51 victory over 200m winner Kaio Almeida (BRA), on 52.84, and 2000 Olympic champion Lars Frolander, on 53.34, 0.06sec ahead of Joeri Verlinden (NED).

Women's 200m medley

Hannah Miley and Sophie Allen repeated their domestic 1-2 at Olympic trials in international waters. Miley turned fifth after butterfly but half way into backstroke had takes change and never looked back on her way to a 2:11.78 victory. Allen clocked 2:13.51 to keep Canada's Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson at bay, her 2:14.64 locking out another Brit in her second final of the day, Aimee Willmott, on 2:15.45.

Men's 200m freestyle

Jarrod Killey (AUS) was led by teammate Tommaso D'Orsogna at the first turn, 25.55 to 25.58 but edged ahead soon after on his way to a 1:48.78 victory. He wear chased all the way by Russian Nikita Lobinsev, on 1:49.32 for second ahead of a joint third place for D'Orsogna and Britain's David Carry, on 1:49.83, the last effort inside 1:50.

Non-Olympic dash finals

In the women's 50m backstroke, Georgia Davies (GBR) added to her 100m win on day 1 with a dominant 28.31 victory over Elena Gemo (ITA) and Sophie Edington (AUS), on 28.71 and 29.10 respectively. 

In the men's 50m breaststroke, Cameron Van Der Burgh (RSA) was a touch shy of his 2011 meet record with a 27.77 win over Felipe Lima (BRA), 27.92, and Giulio Zorzi (RSA), 27.95.  

In the women's 50m butterfly, Silvia Di Pietro (ITA) clocked 26.55 for victory ahead of Katerine Savard (CAN), 26.86, and Jemma Lowe (GBR), 26.94, that just locking out Marieke Guehrer (AUS) in 27.06.

The tour moves on to Canet midweek and concludes in Monte Carlo next weekend.
