WSU Women & Old Dominion Men Capture Patriot Invitational Crowns

FAIRFAX, VA. - The Washington State women's swim team and Old Dominion men's squad took early leads and never looked back to win the first-ever Patriot Invitational titles.

The Cougars (916 pts) bested second-place Ohio (651). Boston College (482), Columbia (331.50) and Buffalo (321) rounded out the top five. George Mason finished sixth (303), while Old Dominion (270) and George Washington (270) tied for seventh. Shippensburg (119), Georgetown (103.50), St. Francis (54), Howard (50) and Xavier (4) rounded out the standings.

The men's standings were much closer following the first-place Monarchs (655). Shippensburg (541.50) and George Washington (540) were separated by 1.5 points for second and third. Georgetown (471) and Mason (455) placed fourth and fifth. Ohio (394), Boston College (388.50), Howard (200) and Xavier (192) rounded out the standings.

In Sunday's action, Washington State's Taryn Ternent won the 100 free, giving her three individual victories on the weekend. The Cougars added a win in the 400 free relay. Emily Bresser won the 200 back for Ohio, and Mason's Louise Middlemore (Nottingham, England) won the 200 breast, her second victory of the weekend. Lucy Eccleston of Columbia took first in the 200 fly, and Ohio's Stephanie Hay won the one-meter diving.

In men's action, Old Dominion's Eric Mitchell took first in the 200 fly, his third victory of the meet, and the Monarchs won the 400 free relay. Shippensburg's John Hughes won the 200 back, and George Washington's Wesley Teter won the 100 free. Fellow Colonial Alvaro Fortuny posted a win in the 200 breast, his second first-place swim of the meet, and teammate Jeremy Hoders won the three-meter diving.

The Patriots continued to swim well in day three of the weekend. Chris Natoli (Alexandria, VA) finished third in the 200 back, Ben Danforth (Arlington, VA) was seventh and Nathan Kellogg (Sandston, VA) placed 14th. Jen Lastfogel (Midlothian, VA) finished fourth in the 100 free, and Brittany East (Danville, VA) placed 14th. Todd Long (Bethlehem, PA) finished 10th in the 100 free, and JP Clark (Fairfax, VA) took 12th. Mike Sihler (Herndon, VA) placed 10th in the 200 breast.

Christy Milstead (Burke, VA) took fourth in the 200 fly, and Katie Swearingen (Centreville, VA) was ninth. Kyle Troop (Poolesville, MD) placed fourth in the three-meter diving, while Tim Fisher (Kokomo, IN) was fifth. Jamie Downing (Midlothian, VA) finished third in the women's one-meter diving, and Ashley Craw (Nashville, TN) placed seventh.

Lastfogel, East, Samantha Ladeveze (Chesapeake, VA) and Swearingen finished seventh in the 400 free relay. The men's A team, Clark, Long, Kellogg, and Danforth, placed fifth.

Mason takes the rest of the semester off and returns to competition in a home dual meet against James Madison Saturday, Jan. 6, at 1 p.m.
