Evans At The Freestyle Double
Jan 28, 2012 - Craig Lord
A day after a 4:36 400m IM at SA State Titles in Adelaide, Blair Evans clocked 4:08.36 and 1:58.23 respectively in 400m and 200m freestyle finals and earned plaudits from her Perth coach - who said there was much more to come in London 2012 Olympic season.
In the 400m, Evans erased Janelle Elford’s 1989 SA All-comers record to finish well up on 18-year-old Jessica Ashwood, 4:14.02, and Jessica Pengelly (RSA), on 4:15.04. Less than an hour later, Evans won the 200m ahead of Emily Seebohm, on 2:01.06. Seebohm later took the 50m free in 25.74.
Of Evans, Magee said: "I expect to see those times from Blair, that’s our focus as we progress towards trials and the challenge was to back up from that and we’ve seen that tonight so I’m happy."
There was, he added, room for improvement in the way Evans raced. "There are still some little things to tweak, we’ve got to keep our eyes on the prize and that will be in March [Olympic trials in the same pool in Adelaide]. Our plan is to swim considerably faster at trials, we’ve got to go a lot quicker when we race girls like Bronte Barratt and Kylie Palmer I think to do that we’ll have to break the Australian Record."
In other action, Daniel Tranter, 20, set a SA All-comers record of 4:20.27 in the 400m IM, while Daniel Arnamnart, on 54.38, got the edge on Hayden Stoeckel, 54.80, in the 100m backstroke.
