Madison Sweeps Mason In Dual Meet Action

FAIRFAX, VA. - James Madison welcomed the George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving squads back to the pool after a month-long break by sweeping both teams in a dual meet at the Mason Aquatic and Fitness Center Saturday afternoon.

The Patriot men fell 191-96, while the women lost 146-123. It was Mason's first competition since the last day of the Patriot Invitational Dec. 3.

Madison took first, second and third place in the women's 200 medley relay and the women's 200 back. The Duke men swept the first three spots in the 200 free, 100 back, 200 fly, 50 free, 100 free, 500 free and 100 fly.

Samantha Smith won the 100 and 200 breast to lead the Madison women, and Julie Lestyan won the 100 free and placed second in the 200 free. Neville Allison won the 500 and 1000 free for the Duke men, while Jeff Hicks won the 100 and 200 back and placed second in the 500 free. Mike Nicholas won the 50 free and took second in the 100 fly. Bret Stone won the 100 fly and finished second in the 200 fly.

Ashley Craw (Nashville, TN) won the one-meter diving and Jamie Downing (Midlothian, VA) took first in the three-meter diving for the Patriot women. Jackalyn Horn (Alexandria, VA) won the 500 free, while Christy Milstead (Burke, VA) and Katie Swearingen (Centreville, VA) placed first and second in the 100 and 200 fly. Louise Middlemore (Nottingham, England) finished second in the 100 and 200 breast.

Cameron Charlton (Ontario, Canada) won the 100 breast and 200 IM and finished second in the 200 breast to lead the Mason men. Tim Fisher (Kokomo, KS) won on the one-meter board, and Kyle Troop (Poolesville, MD) took first in the three-meter diving.

George Mason is back in action in a home dual meet next Friday at 1 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
