Texas Men Dominate Freestyle Events To Defeat Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 1-ranked Texas men's swimming and diving team improved its dual meet record to 3-1 by defeating No. 13 Georgia, 161-133, on Saturday afternoon at the Gabrielson Natatorium.

Texas solidified its lead early by finishing 1-2-3 in both the 100 and 200-yard freestyle events. Sophomore Chris Kemp (Southlake, Texas) led the Longhorns, winning the 100 free in an NCAA consideration time of 44.72, while freshmen Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine) (45.42) and Tony Diers (Houston, Texas) (45.45) followed in second and third, respectively. Sophomore Jim Pullin, Jr. (Munroe Falls, Ohio) also captured first-place honors in the 200 freestyle (1:39.35) with Diers (1:39.35) and senior Scott Goldblatt (Scotch Plains, N.J.)(1:40.43) completing the sweep for Texas.

Also contributing for the Horns were junior Tommy Hannan (Baltimore, Md.), who captured victory in both the 100 backstroke (48.16), and 200-yard IM (1:48.64), senior Matt Ulrickson (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who touched first in the 50 freestyle (20.66), and senior Jamie Rauch (Houston, Texas), who nabbed first-place honors in the 500 free (4:30.04).

In the diving events, junior Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) was a double-winner for Texas, capturing the one-meter and three-meter springboard events, while junior Justin Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) finished third in both events.

Texas returns home and will next compete against No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 5 Arizona on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 26-27 at the Jamail Swim Center.
