UVA Men And Women Post Wins Over N.C. State

RALEIGH, N.C. - The University of Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams successfully began the second half of their respective seasons with victories over N.C. State Saturday afternoon (January 13) at Willis Casey Aquatic Center. The 11th-ranked UVa men notched a 155-81 victory to improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The 11th-ranked Virginia women posted a 136-107 win over the Wolfpack and improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC. The victory extended the Virginia women's team's dual meet winning streak to 25. The Wolfpack men fall to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the ACC. The N.C. State women now stand at 5-2 overall and 0-2 in the ACC.

The 11th-ranked Virginia men won nine of 13 events, including five top-three sweeps, in defeating N.C. State 155-81. First-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) won a pair of events for the Cavaliers as he led top three sweeps in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Anderson won the 100 free in a time of 45.69 and took the 200 free in 1:40.87. First-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) was second in the 200 free (1:42.20) and third in the 100 free (47.10). Fourth-year Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah/Dixie) was second in the 100 free (46.78) and third in the 200 free (1:43.59). First-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) won the 1000 free with a time of 9:09.69 in leading a top-three UVa sweep. Fourth-year Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md./Sherwood) was second in 9:15.49, while second-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) was third (9:20.23). Grimes also won the 500 free with a time of 4:35.05, while DeMarco was second in 4:36.62. First-year Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) led a top-three Virginia sweep in the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 1:48.66. Second-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) was second in 1:51.47, while third-year Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va./Woodside) placed third (1:52.35). The fifth top-three UVa sweep came in the 200 breaststroke with first-year Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville) leading the way with a winning time of 2:05.27. Prichard was second in 2:07.04, while fourth-year Justin Capuco (Burtonsville, Md./Good Counsel) was third in 2:07.16. Fourth-year Michael Fuller (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and second-year Mike Wheeler (Lisbon, Md./McDonogh) rounded out the Cavaliers' individual event winners. Fuller won the 200 butterfly (1:51.39), while Wheeler took the top spot in the 400 individual medley (3:59.06). Virginia also won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.59. Mousetis, Capuco, third-year Matt Lee (Munster, Ind./Munster) and first-year Jonathan Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) swam legs on the winning medley relay.

The 11th-ranked Virginia women won eight events in defeating N.C. State 136-107. First-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) led the way with wins in the 400 individual medley (4:19.73), 500 free (4:51.42) and the 200 breaststroke (2:21.17). Baly led a top three UVa sweep in the 400 IM and 500 free. In the 400 IM, second-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) finished second (4:21.94) and second-year Katey Danforth (Severn, Md./Glen Burnie) was third (4:33.44). In the 500 free, first-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) took second (4:54.07) and first-year Betsy Downey (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) was third (5:07.50). Dykehouse led a top-three Cavalier sweep in the 1000 free with a winning time of 10:09.44. Danforth was second (10.25.38) was second and Downey was third (10:27.10). Second-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) won a pair of events for Virginia. She won the 200 free with a time of 1:52.17 and touched in 2:02.91 to take the top spot in the 200 butterfly. Fourth-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) clocked a time of 2:02.93 to win the 200 backstroke, while first-year Jenna Bridges (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) won the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.80.

The Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action on Saturday, January 20 when they host ACC rival North Carolina at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The men's meet against the 14th-ranked Tar Heels will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the women's meet against seventh-ranked UNC commences at 4:00 p.m.
