Jan 16, 2001

State College, Pa. - The No. 23 Penn State men's swimming and diving team staged a very impressive performance against No. 15 ranked Pittsburgh on senior day. The Nittany Lions set two pool records in their final meet of the season in the McCoy Natatorium.

Penn State opened the meet by setting a new pool record in the 400 yard medley relay. The relay of Josh Weaver (York, Pa.), Joe Peresan (Lancaster, N.Y.), Eugene Botes (Glen Mills, Pa.), and Todd Minnier (Avon Lake, Ohio) posted a time of 3:19.39 just edging the old record of 3:19.42 set last year by the Lions. Minnier also grabbed an individual pool record when he won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:47.63. The freshman's time marks the second-fastest time is school history.

Many of the seniors swam extremely well in their final home meet. Senior captain John Retrum (Anderson, Ind.) grabbed the top spot in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.60. Brian Hostetler (Chambersburg, Pa.) swam the fastest time of the year for the Nittany Lions with a winning time of 20.38 in the 50 freestyle. Peresan posted the fastest times in both the 200 individual medley (1:51.40) and the 200 breaststroke (2:03.58). Penn State dominated the diving competition grabbing the top two spots in both events. In the 1 meter competition, senior Chris Alderman (Arlington, Va.) scored 295.80 points to edge out teammate Steve Bohner (Lansdale, Pa.) who finished with 295.65 points. In the 3-meter competition, Alderman again placed first with 307.20 points and was followed by fellow senior Jeff Harrison (Baltimore, Md.) with 302.70 points.

The Nittany Lions will travel to the University of Michigan next weekend for two days of competition against tough Big Ten opponents. Friday Penn State will swim a dual meet against the defending Big Ten Champion Wolverines. Saturday Penn State will participate in a triangular dual meet with Purdue and Michigan.
