World Cup 7 - Day 1 Report

200 FREE: A solo swim earned Martina Moravcova (SVK) her 21th win in this World Cup, with the time of 1:56.99, 1.04 sec over second placed Elka Graham (AUS). For third place Karen Pickering (GBR) beat Lori Munz (AUS) by just 0.12 sec, with 1:59.70. Moravcova is already virtually the World Cup winner in this Category.

50 BACK: Minutes after having won the 200 free, the versatile Slovakian swimmer plunged in the water to win this event (n. 22 in the WC series) from lane 1, with 28.48. Sarah Price (GBR) took the second place, with 28.82. For third place Canada's Nadine Rolland managed to touch ahead of her fellow country woman Michelle Lischinsky by just 0.01 sec., with 28.91.

100 BREAST: Same podium as in Imperia, and with the same order. Brooke Hanson (AUS), always in the lead from the dive, managed to touch ahead of Emma Igelstroem (SWE), in 1:07.32. Igelstroem, in her turn, managed to hold out US swimmer Megan Quann, and touched in 1:07.57, only 0.03 sec. ahead of Quann. Rhiannon Leier finished 4th in the event and set a Canadian record with her time of 1:07.74.

100 FLY: It was a race between Karen Campbell of the US and Mandy Loots, of South Africa. Campbell stayed ahead of her rival, however Loots closed on in the second part of the race. There respective times were of 59.02 and 59.79.

200 IM: Australia went one-two, with Lori Munz taking the event with 2:11.06 over Jennifer Reilly, 2:14.30.

50 FREE: Martina Moravcova claimed her third win of the day (n. 23rd in the series), with 25.16. For second place Nadine Rolland (CAN) beat UK's Karen Pickering by 0.11 sec., with 25.60.

800 FREE: Olympic champion Brooke Bennett, of the USA, suffered defeat at the hands of 17-year-old Rebecca Cooke, of Great Britain. Cooke, who had a clear lead from the start, won in 8:24.01, a pb, just 0.05 sec short of the national record, also this seasons best world time and World Cup time. Bennett improved her time of Imperia with 8:29.71.

200 BACK: At the end of a much fought race 18-year-old Briton Katy Sexton won over Australia's Clementine Stoney, with 2:08.13, a national record and the fastest World Cup time this season. Stoney was just 0.29 sec behind. Joanna Fargus, another 18-year-old Briton, came in third place with 2:10.40. Sexton said: "It's a bit of a shock and I'm not in the best of health. I wasn't expecting that at all".
