Foster Breaks 50 Fly World Record

Jan 18, 2001  - By Anita Lonsborough

Mark Foster proved that age does not matter at the ripe old age of thirty he once again showed he has no peers when it comes to the sprint events in the 25m pool. The Commonwealth 50m freestyle champion established a world record for the 50m butterfly on day one of the seventh round of the World Cup which is being held in Sheffield.

Before the race he said that he was looking for a world mark as the sprint butterfly is now included in both the World and Olympic programme he has started to include it in his training schedule. Before the race Foster who finished seventh in the 50m freestyle at the Sydney Olympic Games, claimed he produced fast times because he was strong and fit.

His time of 22.87sec shaved 0.32 off the previous best held by Sweden's Olympic 100m champion, Lars Frolander. Afterwards a confident Foster admitted "I was aiming to go under 23 seconds. It's better to smash it than beat it by hundredths". He added "The cash is a big incentive". World record breakers earn themselves four thousand US dollars.
