Maryland Rolls Over George Washington

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams cruised to easy victories over George Washington Wednesday evening at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.

The women's team, ranked No. 17 in this week's CSCAA Top 25, remained undefeated with a 181-60 victory over the Colonials. The men's squad also stayed perfect on the season with a 171-68 win. Both teams are now 7-0 on the year.

On the women's side, Maryland won 12 out of the 13 events in the meet. Senior Katy Novotny (Bel Air, Md.) and junior Jenna Hough (Pittsburgh, Pa.) both won two events for the Terrapins. Novotny took top honors in the 50 free (23.99) and the 100 breast (1:06.86) while Hough won the 500 free (5:04.95) and the 1000 free (10:21.14).

Other winners for the women included freshman Allison Mahlstedt (Houston, Texas) in the 200 free (1:54.68), sophomore Jill Thomas (Baton Rouge, La.) in the 200 IM (2:08.87), sophomore Bridget Mallon (Arlington, Va.) in the 100 fly (57.07), junior Kelly Bowman (Hauppauge, N.Y.) in the 100 free (52.16), sophomore Lauren Smith (Silver Spring, Md.) in the 100 back (59.80) and junior Ashleye Henyan (Corning, N.Y.) on the 3-meter board (237.52). The Terrapin relay teams also won the 200 medley and 200 free events.

For the men, the Terps won 10 of the 13 events on the night. Seniors Predrag Stojadinovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Drew Childs (Wallingford, Pa.) both won two events. Stojadinovic finished first in the 1000 free (9:43.09) and the 500 free (4:41.12). Childs was the winner in the 50 free (20.96) and the 100 back (50.95).

Other winners for Maryland included senior Greg Courtois (Saveuse, France) in the 200 free (1:41.69), junior Ryan Walker (Havertown, Pa.) 200 IM (1:55.51), junior Thomas Ehrhardt (Aschaffenburg, Germany) in the 100 fly (51.76) and senior Aaron Peterson (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the 100 free (47.39). Both of the relay teams also won in the 200 medley and 200 free events.

Both teams return to action Friday, Jan. 19, versus Pittsburgh. The meet will be held at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium and will begin at 4:00 p.m.
